Dave Myrup

I have been asked to serve on the Board of Utah WSF, and I feel this as an honor and privilege. I have been a supporter and member since it was founded.  I have only missed one banquet.  I have a great excuse; I was hunting sheep with my son Brody in the Pine Valley Virgin unit.  Brody got his ram on the day of the banquet December 5, 2010.  Once we got cell service we called Garth Hardy telling him about the hunt.  He was just leaving to go to the banquet.  He said he would pass along the success of the hunt, I told him we would be there in spirit.

Just a little history…When I drew my desert sheep tag in 1987, there were 10 desert sheep permits in the state and no Rocky Mountain Big Horn permits.  My permit was one of five issued on the South San Juan Unit, the hot unit at that time.  At the end of the hunt, only two sheep had been taken, mine and the other one was the nonresident permit holder.  A die-off had started on the unit and it was closed a few years later. The sheep needed help.  What happened next is mind blowing.  Don Peay, Lee Howard and Fred Morris started Utah WSF.  Through the efforts of many sportsmen, hunting organizations, and the Division of Wildlife.  Utah has had a sheep population that did not exist before Utah WSF existed.  A sheep transplant from BC Canada in 1997 brought California bighorn to the state of Utah a sub species of sheep. Since its inception Utah WSF has never looked back and Utah Sheep population has grown.

Working with wildlife is not a onetime fix it takes a constant amount of attention, money and dedication. Thanks to all the donors over the years, from the conservation permits, to anyone who buys a raffle ticket. Take a bow you have made a difference.   My wish is to continue and expand the Utah FNAWS sheep population.  It’s a worthwhile cause for hunters, wildlife watchers and the State of Utah.
